Ahead of season five of Vikings’ return, fans have been left guessing as to whether or not shield maiden Lagertha (played by Katheryn Winnick) will survive.
She is set to try and take on Ivar the Boneless (Alexander Andersen) in upcoming episodes after he took control of Kattegat.
However, she will be slightly distracted by her new love interest Bishop Heahmund (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).
But it seems that Lagertha’s new relationship could lead to her untimely death.
Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner Michael Hirst hinted that Lagertha and Heahmund’s romance could be “dangerous”.
When asked what the future holds for Lagertha, actress Katheryn dished: “Lagertha has been through so much in the last five seasons, from losing multiple children through miscarriages and Ragnar betraying her and having a kingdom.
“Now she has this little pipsqueak [Ivar the Boneless] she has to do deal with but do not worry, they are definitely going to challenge each other at some point.”
Michael then chipped in to note: “I think they see something similar in each other and it’s dangerous.
“But it’s something you can’t walk away from. So from the very beginning, it’s a very dangerous relationship and who would expect anything else from Lagertha.”
Could Heahmund betray Lagertha and hand her over to Ivar to be murdered?
Speaking about why Lagertha does fall for the Bishop, Katheryn explained: “It was interesting because I remember sitting down with Michael and thinking, she’s had a lot of lovers and she’s had to kill them to get rid of them, so I was thinking at this stage, who would get Lagertha’s interest?
“It would have to be someone who knows her and is attracted to her and respects where she is in life.”
She noted that the Bishop has a “philosophical background” and “he’s a warrior”.
However, Clive Standen, who stars as Rollo, joked Heahmund wouldn’t last very long when his character returns.
“He’s just filling the gap until Rollo gets back,” he said.
It comes after actor Alexander hinted that Ivar would survive part B of season five.
After posting a photo of himself on set on his Instagram page, fans went into overdrive believing he had confirmed his fate.
“You look older on this picture.. another big time skip in s6? I am pumped,” one fan commented.
Another added: “Are y’all filming season 6?”
Vikings season 5 will return to Amazon Prime Video in 2018.
