Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: Cersei Lannister could hold onto power | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

However, there are some compelling reasons which could mean Cersei (played by Lena Headey) clings to power after all on the HBO show.

Plenty of Game of Thrones fans are gunning for other candidates to take over from Cersei but she could go against the odds.

One fan has theorised that she won’t be overtaken, and for some very interesting reasons.

Reddit user CapnCook97 has pointed out several factors that hint toward her victory, including the fact that she has nothing to lose and she’s an expert in the game.

“The Targaryens are moving to fight the White Walkers, Cersei’s greatest threats are going to clash and lower their numbers, if the White Walkers win then it’s game over for everyone, fine.

“But if the Targaryen’s win; they are going to lose A LOT of soldiers to the undead, perhaps even another dragon.

“There are few allies left to call upon in Westeros, every life lost is going to seriously effect the concluding battle.”

The viewer also notes that Cersei has some very powerful allies that look likely to come into play in the finale.

Season seven saw Cersei purchase the use of the Golden Company in order to strengthen her military.

As the fan explains: “Cersei has the iron fleet, which consists of a solid army, not to mention the Golden Company which consists of 10,000 infantry, cavalry and war elephants.

“The Golden Company are known for never breaking a contract, so they can’t be bought off.”

So will Cersei be able to keep her position of power?

Plenty of fans think Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) will be the one to steal the power away.

Cersei’s brother, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) has joined the side of the Mother of Dragons but it may not stay that way.

It seems extremely unlikely that Tyrion would defect and return to his sister’s side given the cruel treatment he has been subjected to.

But if he’s worried about where things are going with Daenerys, who knows what Tyrion could do.

Fans will remember the concerned expression Tyrion pulled when he saw Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys about to get a lot closer at the end of season seven.

And the revelation that Jon and Daenerys are in fact related will cause some serious shockwaves.

Viewers will have to tune in when the show returns next year to find out who sits on the Iron Throne once and for all – if anyone survives that is.

Game of Thrones season 8 will return to HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2019. Seasons 1-7 are currently streaming on NOW TV.
